Hey there deliah, 이 노래에는 재미 있는 사연이 하나 있는데
노래를 작사, 작곡한 탐 히긴슨 (Tom Higgenson)은 5년 전에 친구의 파티에서 딜라이라 디크레센조 (Delilah DiCrescenzo)를 만나 첫 눈에 반했다고 합니다.
딜라일라를 만났을 때 농담으로 당신을 위한 노래를 썼다고 말했다고 하는데요. 아직 곡을 쓴 것도 아니면서, 딜라일라의 환심을 사기 위해 살짝 거짓말을 했다는 겁니다. 그러다가 나중에 딜라일라처럼 멀리 떨어져있는 여성과 사귀면서 장거리 연애를 한다면 어떤 기분일까 상상하면서 쓴 노래가 바로 ‘Hey There Delilah’라고 하는데요. 노래를 쓰고나서 녹음한 씨디를 딜라일라에게 보냈지만 딜라일라의 마음을 사로잡는데는 성공하지 못했다고 하네요. (그 당시에 이미 남자친구가 있었다고 합니다.)
이 노래의 주인공 딜라일라 디크레센조는 당시 콜럼비아 대학교 학생이었는데요. 지금은 졸업해서 펜실베니아에 살고있는 것으로 알려졌습니다. 딜라일라는 steeplechase, 그러니까 육상의 장애물 경주 선수 입니다. (올림픽 대표 결정전을 노릴정도의 유망주라고 합니다.)
USA Today 신문이 보도한데 따르면 딜라일라는 이 노래를 듣고 감명을 받긴 했지만 이미 사귀는 남자 친구가 있어서 탐 히긴슨의 구애를 거절했다고 합니다.
2007년 미국에서는 어딜 가나 이 노래가 흘러 나왔는데요. 딜라일라는 이 노래를 들을 때 마다 “바로 내 얘기에요.”라고 모든 사람에게 알리고 싶을 만큼 자랑스럽기도 했지만, 또 한편으로 “이제 그만”이라고 소리 지르고 싶은 심정도 들었다고 하네요. (이 노래는 엄청난 히트를 기록했습니다. 실제 노래가 발표된 것은 2005년이었으나, 2년후에 인기를 끌었기 때문에 엘범이 재발매 되었었죠. ) 그래미상 후보들이 발표됐는데 플레인 와이트 티즈는 이 노래로 ‘올해의 노래’ 등 두 개 부문에 후보로 올랐죠.
그리고 한번 만났을뿐 데이트 한번 한적 없는 사이였던 둘이 함께 그래미에 참석하게 됩니다.
