On August 12, 1961,
a wall was erected
down the middle of the city of Berlin.
The world was divided by a cold war
and the Berlin Wall
was the most hated symbol of that divide
Reviled. Graffitied. Spit upon.
We thought the wall would stand forever,
and now that it’s gone,
we don’t know who we are anymore.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Hedwig is like that wall,
standing before you in the divide
between East and West,
Slavery and Freedom,
Man and Woman,
Top and Bottom.
And you can try to tear her down,
but before you do,
remember one thing.

베를린 시 한 가운데 장벽이 생겼지.
냉전으로 세계는 둘로 나뉘어졌어.
베를린 장벽은 분단의 최악의 상징이었지.
욕설이 써있고, 낙서가 칠해지고, 침들이 뱉어진.
우린 그 장벽이 영원히 서있을 거라 생각했는데
이젠 무너져 버렸어.
우린 우리 자신이 누군지조차 모르겠어.
신사 숙녀 여러분.
당신들 앞에 서있는 헤드빅은 그 장벽 같은 존재야.
동과 서 사이에
노예제와 자유 사이에
남자와 여자 사이에
최고와 최악 사이에 나뉘어진.
당신들은 날 헐뜯고 비난 할 수 있지.
하지만 그전에 한 가지만 기억해 줘.
