The US is trying to prod Israel and the Palestinians into getting back on the road to peace. Correspondent Mark Levee reports that a top US official is now in the region this weekend.
— Condoleezza Rice is here as the personal envoy of President Bush. She’ll be pushing both sides, the Israelis and the Palestinians, to move toward implementing the roadmap peace plan. The first step is an end to nearly three years of violence, then it leads to a Palestinian state in three years.
And Palestinian foreign minister Nabil Shaath believes the US effort is on course.
— We’ve already achieved a very important step in the phase one of the roadmap, full stop ceasefire in, on all fronts, and a withdrawal from Gaza and Bethlehem. We’re going to talk about next steps.
There are also reports that Islamic Jihad is on the cusp of calling off its attacks on Israel for a period of 90 days to give the US peace plan a chance to take root.

In Iraq, Americans keep dying. The bodies of two GIs who went missing earlier this week have been found about 20 miles from Baghdad. In Washington, correspondent Fritz Furber reports the total American deaths in Iraq now has surpassed 200.
— A US military spokesman says combat is not over. Two missing American soldiers were found dead Saturday, pushing the number killed to at least 61 since major combat was declared over May 1st. The spokesman says American troops may soon intensify efforts to quash resistance.
Nearly a-third of all US deaths in Iraq have occurred since formal hostilities ended.

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is asking the Security Council to authorize a peace-keeping force for Liberia. Rebel forces this week have besieged the capital of Monrovia in an effort to oust President Charles Taylor. About 500 civilians have been killed in the process.

— In January, I submitted to Congress a framework for Medicare reform that insisted on giving seniors access to prescription drug coverage and offering more choices under Medicare. The centerpiece of this approach is choice. Seniors should be able to choose the healthcare plans that suit their needs.
