A fishing charter trip turned deadly this morning off the coast of Oregon as a 32-foot boat with 19 people aboard was swamped. Correspondent Andrew Kramer in Portland reports the passengers were plunged into the chilly waters of the Pacific.
— A nurse at the hospital was told by one of the survivors that the boat was hit by a large wave and was apparently swamped and then capsized. This happened as it was leaving the Tillamook Bay, an area just north of the jetty where there were very large breakers coming off the Pacific Ocean that tumble into the boating channel and make for quite a treacherous passage.
So far nine are known dead, two are still missing, eight were rescued.

오늘 뉴스는 순전히 단어를 의미를 제대로 파악하지 못한 데서… charter는 전세 비행기나 보트, etty는 부두, 선창, 그리고 breaker는 부서지는 파도, 그리고 swamp는 늪이라고만 알고 있었는데 동사로는 침몰시키다도 있었군요. 그리고 32-foot boat 는 32foot ball이라고 들렸고.. 그런데 treacherous passage는 무슨 뜻일까…

— The child born in America in the year 2000 has roughly a one in three chance of developing diabetes during his or her lifetime. It’s a little higher for girls. It’s about 39% chance of developing diabetes in her lifetime, compared to a male child has a 33% chance.
Diabetes caused by obesity and lack of exercise often leads to blindness, kidney failure, and heart disease.

Despite a week of tit-for-tat violence, the two sides in the Middle East are still trying to forge peace. A Palestinian cabinet minister says the latest US proposal for peace in the Mid East has Israel pulling out from large parts of the Gaza Strip and two West Bank cities. The minister also says the two sides will declare a new cease fire. Secretary of state Powell continues to work the phones hoping to enlist Arab support in reining in the Middle East terrorists.

— The president announced his reelection about a month ago, and immediately started gathering donations on the Internet and through the mail. But he’s about to embark on a two-week cross-country sprint expected to take in millions of dollars. The first event is Tuesday in Washington, D.C., where supporters will pay $2,000 apiece for hamburgers, hot dogs, and nachos. First lady Laura Bush and vice president Dick Cheney will also hit the fund-raising circuit. In all, the president is expected to raise no less than $200 million over the next several months. 주말 다들 잘 보내셨나요? 다시 한 주가 시작되었습니다. 첫 기사가 비교적 쉬워서 기분이 좋네요. 한국과는 달리 미국은 대통령 임기가 4년으로 우리보다 1년 짧지만 재선이 가능하죠. 부시가 한 달 전쯤에 재선에 도전하겠다고 밝히고 나서 발 빠르게 선거자금을 위한 모금에 들어갔네요. 보통 자금을 모으다란 표현으로 ((raise fund))를 쓰죠. 명사로 만드니 ((fund raising))이 되네요. 더불어서 ((gathering donations))도 같이 세트로 알아두면 좋겠네요. ((hit the fund raising, 선거모금을 시작하다)) 원래 ((hit the road))가 있는데 시작하다, 떠나다는 뜻이죠. 아마 거기서 응용된 표현 같습니다. ((embark, 사업에 착수하다, 시작하다)) 대통령이 선거비용 모금을 위해 크로스컨츄리 달리기 경주를 연다는 의미 같은데, 자신도 직접 참가할까요? 궁금하네요. ((apiece; each or for each one, 각각, 각자에게)) 알아듣기 쉽게 말하면 한 명당 2000달러씩 낸다는 거겠죠. 전 햄버거나 핫도그 하나에 2000달러를 낸다는 의미인줄 알았네요. 결국 결과적으로는 같은 거지만…. ((nachos: a type of Mexican food that consists of pieces of TORTILLA (=thin flat bread) heated with beans and cheese on top)) 음식 이름이네요. 첨 들어봅니다. 영부인과 부통령도 선거자금을 마련하는 데 발벗고 나서네요. 몇 달 동안 적어도 이백만 달러는((no less than $200 million, as much as $200 million)) ((no more than, 기껏해야)) 거뜬히 모을 거라고 예상하네요. 마지막에 좀 이상하게 꼬였네요. ((in all, 전부해서)) 잘 안 들리네요. 꼭 ((you know))처럼 들립니다. 다시 들으면 아닌 거 같기도 한데, 그냥 무심결에 들으니 그렇게 들리네요. 오늘은 따라 읽기를 이십 회 정도 하고 나서 쉐도잉을 해보았습니다. 원래는 내용확인을 안하고 해야 될 터이지만 청취력이 안되니 일단 내용을 달달 외운 뒤에 AP기사를 따라 해보았습니다. 앵커보다 한 템포 늦게 시작해서 따라가는데 힘드네요. 서너 번 하고 말았지만 좀 더 적극적이고 집중력이 요구되는 청취력 훈련인 것 같습니다. 한번 해보시길 권합니다. 어렵네요. 첨부터 들리긴 들리는데 알 수 없는 표현이 나와서 한참 헤맸네요. ((yet-to-be published book, 아직 출판되지 않은 책)) ((have yet to, ~해야만 한다, 아직 하지 않다)) 종종 나온 표현인데, 역시 응용표현 같습니다. ((manhunt, 조직적으로 이뤄지는 범죄수사)) 아마 워싱턴 저격수를 체포하기까지의 경찰수사 내용을 담은 책으로 짐작되네요. ((post sth on the Internet, 인터넷에 올리다)) 제가 즐겨 쓰는 표현이자 유일하게 사용할 줄 아는 표현이기도 합니다. 비록 듣지는 못했지만…T.T 인터넷에 글 올리거나 자료를 올린다는 말을 할 때 그냥 포스트를 쓰면 되더라구요. 마지막에 나온 ((list)) 역시 비슷하게 사용 가능한가 봅니다. 중간에 ((ruled back in March))가 나오죠. 들을 때는 꼭 의미단위가 ((ruled back + in March))로 여겨지지만, ((ruled + back in March))가 맞겠죠. 지난 3월에 판결 내리기를~, 이렇게 되겠죠. 출판도 안된 책을 미리 예약부터 받다니 장사수완이 여간한 게 아니네요. 어쨌거나 항소는 했고, 주법원과 연방법원에서는 판결을 앞두고 있고, 그 와중에도 계속 주문신청은 받으려 하네요. ((pre-sale, pre-order)) 사전판매? 사전주문? 우리말로 명쾌하게 대응단어를 찾기는 어렵네요. 어쨌거나 ((post-war Iraq, 전후 이라크)), ((pre-war Iraq, 전쟁 전 이라크)) 표현을 잘 익혀두면 다른 상황에서도 응용도 가능하고, 적어도 알아듣기는 쉽죠. 잘 새겨두시길….Hope all is well.
